Since 1984, USAID has funded the Demographic and Health Surveys to provide technical assistance to more than 200 surveys in 75 countries and has increased the global understanding of health and population trends in developing countries.

ClickDiagnostics addresses two main healthcare issues in developing countries: 1. Access to medical specialists in under-served regions; 2. Collection of real-time data for interventions in areas such as maternal mortality, cancer or AIDS.

Mobilizing the medical record is a high impact opportunity, EMR adoption has direct and well documented health impact. However, EMRs are rarely implemented successfully in poor areas because of hardware that is expensive, unfamiliar, or unavailable locally, lack of internet and hassles associated with data re-entry. These issues can be address by SIM based phones.

The African Virtual Open Initiatives and Resources (AVOIR) is a consortium of African University IT Departments that have developed and deployed an OpenCourseWare (OCW) to be used in the animal health field and veterinary services management system for data collection through mobile devices.
